Car and Driver Reviews 2011 Shelby GT500

2011 Shelby GT500 Body stylesThe popular automotive magazine and website has gotten it’s first test drive of the 2011 Mustang Shelby GT500.  It’s hard for die hard fans to review such an iconic and fresh faced Mustang, but Car and Driver has done a great job of taking a step back and giving a fair review.  They are quick to point out problem areas of previous GT500′s and how the new 2011 is what was needed all along.

Too much weight was the number one concern with last years GT500 and the weights affect on handling.  Thanks to the Ford engineers, the 2011 GT500 features a completely reworked aluminum block 5.4 liter roots style super charged engine.  This engine is much lighter than 2007-2010 models, which coupled with an independent rear suspension makes for the best handling GT500 ever.  It’s amazing what a difference losing 102 lbs in the engine can have on over-steer, braking, and even heat issues under track use.

Again, power was never an issue with Car and Driver reviews of the GT500, rather it’s predictability in the corners.  Older GT500′s struggled with G force tests and sports car like cornering.  Car and Driver likened the handling of the 2011 GT500 to the latest Corvette Grand Sport and the latest BMW M3.  The 2011 Shelby produces 550 horsepower and 510 lb ft of torque that requires nothing short of an engineering marvel reign in for street manners.

In closing Car and Driver dinged the 2011 Shelby GT500 because of it’s price tag.  The standard 2011 Mustang GT is almost as fast, almost as powerul, and handles almost identically, yet costs $20,000 less.  So, they raise the question, is it only die hard fans that will plop down the extra cash for a marginally better Mustang?

In my opinion the GT500 is in a completely different class than the GT’s.  It’s target audience, who is capable of purchasing the expensive ride, are the same people who would have been spending the extra money anyway.  The 2011 GT500 is priced to compete and steal market share from the likes of Corvette, which doesn’t even offer a little brother for $20k less.  No, I don’t think the GT500 will be winning over any buyers who would be purchasing a GT, but it sure will tempt those Vette buyers.
